Mission REACH project (Fiber Optics)

The Technology Information, Forecasting and Assesment Council (TIFAC) of
the Department of Science and Technology(DST) launched Mission REACH (Relevence
and Excellence in ACHieving new heights in educational institutions) in
the year 2000 - a mission embedded in its technology vision 2020. TIFAC
is addressing the vision through an objetive - driven approach by nurturing
quality manpower in areas of high relevance to the indian industry
Today's liberalized economic world order is witnessing a silent competition
for sustenance and excellence in almost every sector of economy. Focussing
on such competition - both national and global levels, the Technology Information,
Forecasting and Assesment Council(TIFAC) of the Department of Science and
Technology(DST) launched Mission REACH (Relevence and Excellence in ACHieving
new heights in educational institutions) in the year 2000 - a mission embedded
in its technology vision 2020. TIFAC is addressing the vision through an
objetive - driven approach by nurturing quality manpower in areas of high

BioDiesel Research Innovations

In India, the interest in biodiesel has grown vividly during the last few
years. The chief rationale for biodiesel in India is energy security. Better
environmental performance, greening of wastelands and creation of new employment
opportunities - are seen as some of the other advantages of biodiesel.
Delhi College of Engineering has emerged as a leading technological institutions
of India which has been accredited as the hub of advanced level research
in propagation of petro-plants, their improved agro-practices, development
of indigenous biodiesel production technology, design and development of
small to medium capacity biodiesel processing unit, quality assurance of
biodiesel and trial of biodiesel in diesel engines and vehicles.
Biodiesel from Mahua, Linseed, Rice Bran, waste cooking oil from the Mc
Donalds, Crude Palm, Castor, Jatropha & Karanja have already been prepared
and successfully tested in diesel engines & vehicles. The college has
taken a lead in development of small capacity biodiesel reactors for the
production of Biodiesel. Small capacity of reactors of 5 & 10 liters
biodiesel were designed and developed two years back. The other one is a
50 liters batch size reactor designed and fabricated specifically for the
rural operative conditions. The reactor being capable of producing 50 lts
of Biodiesel in one cycle costs about 15,000 Rs, hence economically viable
solution for making biodiesel for the replacement of the costly fossils
in the rural areas. more>>
Intel Planet Lab at DCE
The Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) has been selected by Intel Technology
Pvt. Ltd. and ERNET to join Planet Lab Consortium, which already has one
hundred fifty of the world's top universities and industrial research labs
including MIT, Stanford, Princeton University, UC Berkeley, University of
Washington, AT&T Labs, Cambridge University, France Telecom, HP, NEC
Labs, as its members.
Planet Lab is an open, globally distributed test bed for developing, deploying
and accessing planetary-scale network services. It provides an environment
for testing the next generation of distributed applications and services.
There are currently 599 nodes at 284 sites world wide available to support
both short-term experiments and long-running network services.
UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE PROJECT
The scale and suddenness of the 7/11 tragedy has brought back into focus
the country's need for effective surveillance.
While India is yet to develop its own technology for stealth surveillance
through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), Delhi College of Engineering (DCE)
has developed a laboratory-level model, weighing 1.8 kg and capable of lifting
28 kg weight.
With a light-weight carbon frame, the vehicle is equipped with surveillance
cameras, wireless sensors and vision-processing software. It is capable
of operating both on the ground and in air.
The complete vehicle comprises twin UAVs, one large and one small. The
latter is positioned on the former during launch and later takes off from
the orbiting mother UAV after a pre-determined height.
DCE HYBRID CAR
A student team of DCE has designed and developed a gasoline-electric hybrid
car for participation in Annual Green Car Festival organized by North East
Sustainable Energy Association of USA in May 2006. The first hybrid car
of India was flagged off by Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi
today, April 27, 2006 from her residence. Dr. Deepak Pantal, Vice-Chanccellor
of Delhi University was also present
Super Mileage Vehicle
With the aim of improving fuel efficiency, 14 members student team of Delhi
College of Engineering has designed and developed a super mileage vehicle
to participate in the world wide super mileage vehicle competition organized
by SAE International (Society of Automobile Engineers) at Marshall, Michigan,USA.
This prestigious event has participation from universities from France,
America, U.K. etc. Incidentally, Michigan is the home for auto industry
and houses General Electric and Chrslyer Corporation a world auto joints.
This is the first time a team from India has participated in the world competition
on innovative concept car.
MISSION AUR “SOVEREIGN”
The mission of this research project is to make an “AUTONOMOUS URBAN
ROBOT” that will be able to navigate all types of urban terrains including
stairs, curbs, and walls and even operate an elevator autonomously. The
robot will be able to meet the defense requirement for target identification,
bomb detection, firing from a long distance using laser gun, and fight against
the terrorists, thus reducing loss of human life. The name “SOVEREIGN”
reflects the property of our robot to be fully independent and autonomous.
Innovation and attention to detail are the hallmarks of sovereign’s
design. The design was chosen after considering the aim from all points
of view and to bring a revolution in the world. To this end, the overall
vehicle design stresses safety, serviceability, ruggedness, and utility.
These design objectives are achieved through innovative design features
that have been implemented within the mechanical, electronic, and navigational
systems onboard sovereign.
DEFIANZ RACING CAR
Defianz_racing provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to learn
and develop multi-disciplinary teamwork plus innovative, design, leadership,
management, marketing, finance and practical skills. Educating and training
the very best graduates is what Defianz_racing does.
Defianz_racing designs a formula car, which competes with over a 100 teams
from around the world in the prestigious Formula Student competition held
in UK every year in July. The team was first constituted in 2002. In the
team’s glorious 5 year history, it has won many awards. The team in
its very first attempt bagged the " FISITA Best Endeavour Award".
The efforts of the team in this regard are commendable which is constantly
rising above the paucity of funds, materials and technical expertise and
making up for it by their unending determination to succeed. The team was
declared runners up in cost effectiveness in 2006 and their performance
in 2007 overshadowed all it’s previous ones.
In addition to the above other projects include the following:
1. SOLAR CAR
2 . ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE (MINI BAJA)
