The strong demand for non-renewable resources coupled with importance of transportation has greatly accentuated the need for fuel efficient vehicles. In addition to that escalating fuel costs further bring the problem in limelight. In the era where vehicles are now available as commercial products from original equipment manufacturers, consumers today have grown smart enough to explore their options from a relatively competitive market. This is where manufacturers strive for mileage.
The SAE-Supermileage competition is a student design competition organized by the Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE-International).The competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. Students have the opportunity to set a world fuel economy record and increase public awareness of fuel economy. The vehicles must be conceived, designed and fabricated by the students without direct involvement from practicing engineers, faculty or professionals from the racing community, and the team must be equipped to explain and justify their design.
The event, supported by various corporate giants from all over the world is held in various parts of the world, including Marshall, Michigan (U.S.A) annually. The best teams from around the globe put their engineered vehicles to test and fight for the top awards. The competition has been witnessing record mileages being attained by the frontrunners, thus setting higher benchmarks for new entrants as well.
Delhi College of Engineeering (DCE) occupies a pivotal position in the matrix of technical schools in the country, imparting sound technical education to its students. This ensures that the students, right from the rudimentary stages of their technical education develop an inquisitive temper and are exposed to the latest technologies, thus motivating them to take up challenges in their fields. The Delhi College of Engineering Student team was the first ever team from Asia to participate in the competition in 2005 and won laurels.
